Arrived in Valdez

I got to Valdez last Wednesday under cool, cloudy skies. 

I took a cruise to Columbia Glacier on Thursday.  I'll cover that in a future post. 

Valdez sits on a narrow spot of land between Valdez Bay to the south and some rather tall mountains to the north.  The terminal for the Alaska Pipeline is on the south side of the bay.  The old townsite, which was wiped out by a tsunami in the 1964 earthquake, is on the east end of the lake.  The outlet to Prince William Sound is on the west end.  Since the bay is surrounded by mountains there really isn't anywhere to run after an earthquake, except straight up those mountains...
